This 12th-century monastery is one of Scotland's most impressive and well-preserved medieval monuments, featuring a stunning church with a tall, narrow nave and ornate stone carvings, alongside a range of other historic buildings including a sacristy, chapter house, and dormitory.
A small peaceful place in the care of St John Scotland and Historic Scotland, open for 8 hours a week (1300-1700 Sat/Sun). PS2 unless HS or EH/Cadw renewal member, entry price. Guidebook at PS5 seemed pricey. There are two floors you can access with exhibitions on the upper floor. Car park allows for up to 5 or 6 cars.
Interesting building with a lot of historical interest. Available as a venue for weddings and other occasions. David at the ticket office a nice knowledgeable chap . If you are in the area its well worth a visit .
We went to this little town only because I liked the name and surprise... we found a hidden treasure. This building from a distant past is beautiful and reasonably well preserved, surrounded by an old cemetery. Now we have another piece of Scottish history to show our friends when they come visiting Bonnie Scotland!
You have to be an history geek to enjoy this. My advice is to read up on the local history before visiting. Very strong connections to the original Order of St John (Knights Hospitallers).
Incredible site! Amazing history and in a beautiful location.
Great place to see. Specially if you love Templar history.
