Tudor House is Southampton's most important historic building, reveling over 800 years of history in one fascinating location at the heart of the Old Town. The timber-framed building facing St Michael's Square was built in the late 15th Century, with King John's Palace, an adjacent Norman house accessible from Tudor House Garden, dating back a further 300 years. Tudor House gives a unique and atmospheric insight into the lives and times of both its residents through the years, and of Southampton itself. It appeals to visitors of all ages and interests, who find the family-friendly activities, interactive technology and fascinating displays a winning combination.
Very large nice historic site. It's called Tudor house but it also has king johns palace, a house dating back to the Norman times built before the Southampton wall. Our tour guide Tim was very knowledgeable giving us all kinds of information on the town in the middle ages. The garden was neat too as well as the sprawling house. We had to wait for a school group but the guides did a good job of staggering the rest of us so we wouldn't have to wait too long for them. One of the staff showed us the attic that was closed to the general public. It was neat to see this part of the building as it was under reconstruction. We bought an adorable little teddy bear with a monk robe in the gift shop. Best place to learn about medieval, Tudor and other historical periods in Southampton.
Very informative about multiple periods in the history of Southampton. It's a house, a garden and part of a 900 year old castle. The tour starts with an audio visual history of the complex and the continues with a self guided tour. You get a free audio guide with your admission and it is really good. If you only visit one spot in Southampton visit this one. It is much more informative than the merchant house a block over.
Highlight of Southampton history by the waterfront. Really interesting narration of the changing fortune since medieval times. Well set out museum chronicling the lives of the inhabitants.
Visited today with my mom and kids, the garden is lovely but a bit dry, inside lots of artefacts, activities for kids, helpful guide. Also cofe shop for refreshment. We loved it.
We decided to start visiting some of the Southampton museums and learn more about the city I've lived in for many years. The staff were friendly and explained the facilities. The museum starts with a short audio experience that gives a brief overview. You then are guided by an audio tour around the building learning about the various changes in Southampton over the years. I've read some mixed reviews but was pleasantly surprised with the building and gardens. The later probably being nicer in the spring/summer. The cafe was decent and I had a nice late. The view is over the garden which was pleasant. Don't expect anything fancy, it will take you between 1 and 2 hours to look around. I think it's worth a visit and I like helping local museums.
If you're visiting Southampton this place is good for some historical interest. It's a mix of different centuries all in one. From medieval times to Georgian and Victorian. Well worth a visit for locals and visitors. It's compact and can be walked around in about an hour. Lots of different articles throughout the centuries as is on two floors with a garden. It has a small cafe inside too. There are restrooms for all with disabled facilities. It's got a guide in most rooms for additional information. It's relatively inexpensive to get in and I thought it was very interesting.
