A little gem of a museum in the village of Uffington. Exhibitions on John Betjeman & Thomas Hughes who both lived in the village. Victorian schoolroom explains the 400 years of education & a mock school for children. Exhibition explains the history of the famous White Horse & the annual scouring. For 2024 the exhibition commemorates the Wellington Bomber DV595 that crashed outside Uffington with the loss of six lives. Please note the museum is housed in a 400 year old Grade II listed building. It has no running water, however toilets are available in the church, pub & village shop. Parking is outside the village school & there are 2 steps up to the path leading to the door
Beautiful little museum tucked away by the village church. Lots of interesting letters and information to read about the history of this gorgeous village and the people who have passed through. Detailed information on the White Horse that stands so prominently above the village. Well worth a visit. It's freezing but donations are gratefully received to keep this gem of a place ticking over.
A Great Exhibition about the life-long relationship between poet laureate Sir John Betjeman and his teddy bear, Archibald Ormsby-Gore -- better known as Archie and Together with a toy elephant known as Jumbo, he was a lifelong companion of Betjeman's. Betjeman was a churchwarden at Uffington, the Berkshire village (in Oxfordshire since boundary changes of 1974) where he lived from 1934 to 1945
It's a one-room volunteer-run free museum. Very friendly. Some actual stuff but mostly photos and text displays. Tea and cakes and toilets might be available at St Mary's church next door if you get the timing right - we did!
A small, volunteer-run museum that packs a big punch: it tells the history of the Vale, including its literary heritage, the rural economy of the area and local history all in a beautiful C17th school room. Well worth a visit.
