Unst Boat Haven is a picturesque harbour located on the island of Unst, in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. The haven is a natural anchorage, surrounded by rugged hills and cliffs, and is a popular spot for sailors, fishermen, and nature enthusiasts. The harbour is home to a small fleet of fishing boats, as well as yachts and other pleasure craft, and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the sea. Visitors can enjoy walking along the harbour walls, taking in the sights and sounds of the bustling waterfront, and exploring the nearby village of Baltasound.
Very interesting exhibition. Still in shock at just how many herring the "Gutter Lasses" ladies filleted per minute - between 40 - 60 PER MINUTE, 6 days a week, 12 hours per day! That's one per second, totally mind blowing, and its not often spoken about just how slave like the conditions were, for all those involved in the industry at that time. The entry fee was minimal and a lovely local attendant was extremely friendly.
An interesting little museum charting the history of boats in Unst and around Shetland. It's not hugely interactive, but if you're happy to go old school and read the information off little cards, you will get on fine here.
An amazing place to visit. Great custodian who has lots of lovely stories to tell. Well worth a visit.
Not open today in spite of shown as open on here. The phone number shown is invalid?? We did a 5 mile walk from Balta and back to visit this closed venue.
