A flight of four locks on the River Severn, where boats are lifted or lowered a total of 21 metres as they travel upstream or downstream, with each lock gate weighing around 20 tonnes and operated by hydraulic paddles.
Upper Lode lock, near Tewkesbury, is only reached on foot, and the lock itself and lock island are not accessible to the public. However the Severn path runs adjacent to the lock and the lock keeper may well be happy to chat April-October if they are not busy (not manned permanently during the winter). Long walk from Tewkesbury - access via the Ledbury Road, turn left onto a path shortly after the road bridge just past the boat club. Great for a walk, with or without a canine companion.
What a beautiful place to spend some quiet time. Only a short walk away from Tewkesbury town centre and well worth it for the stunning scenery. Highly recommend a trip across whilst in Tewkesbury.
Lovely spot along the canal will definitely come again .food looked amazing even tho I didn't have any
Very big lock but not as deep as you might think. Very helpful safety conscious lock keeper
A fascinating lock on the river. There were harbour porpoises in the area around the weir
A difficult lock to portage with a kayak as the lower section does not have a platform low enough to relaunch a kayak easily. However, a very helpful lady lock keeper told us we could kayak through the lock itself as we had BCU licenses. The lock gates are electrically operated by the lock keeper, so we paddled in and watched the fun as the water level dropped. A great experience as it's a huge lock. I don't think we could have portaged across, so this saved our trip. Note the lock is operated from 8am to 6pm. We just made it in time.
Good for kids
