Ushaw Historic House, Chapels & Gardens is a majestic historic estate of 500 acres, in the heart of the Durham countryside. Formerly a seminary college, now a unique heritage and cultural visitor attraction, our glorious Georgian and Victorian Gothic architecture and stunning grounds make Ushaw the perfect place for families to explore and enjoy, and to take part in our activities programme throughout the seasons.
Ushaw hall is a beautiful place with gorgeous gardens. We visited here for a "wedding walk event". There were 70 wedding gowns on mannequins to view in the chapel and then a live show with models wearing brides dresses which were up to 144 years old. It was very interesting. The only criticism I have is that as it was an early evening event the Hall could have provided food to buy just prior to the live show.
(Review of the Hall not the accommodation) Good place for a day out, not too expensive to enter, friendly service, and more importantly an impressive historic set of buildings with classic Pugin-designed interiors. The complex is not the oldest at 'only' 200 years old, but the multiple chapels in particular are splendid ornate works of art. There are a few other buildings you can visit or look at from the outside, and an ornamental garden. Parking is free. Try to book onto the free guided tour, we didn't know it existed and just missed it!
We stayed here one night on our journey to Scotland. Very friendly staff. We had a room for a wheelchair guest, with two separate comfortable beds. The room was very spacious and the (bathroom) facilities were placed low. Supports were also available where necessary. Breakfast was sufficient. The building and gardens are also definitely worth a visit!
Went to see wedding dresses through 100 years. But also the gardens. Did not know it had an autonomy exhibition which was good. Interesting architecture inside. Has a cafe. This is not a hotel although they might do bed and breakfast.
Simple, comfortable unserviced rooms, but in a remarkable location! We received a very friendly welcome and the property is wonderfully quiet - no traffic noise at all. Be aware though, that the walls are thin and you can hear every step and conversation outside, as well as children banging doors etc. - not all neighbours are considerate! Things settle down fairly early though, as there is no TV . There is a very good continental breakfast served in the cafe, with cafe style coffees. The buildings are well worth exploring, they are quite lovely, especially St Cuthbert's Chapel. The grounds are extensive and peaceful. Other notes: you can park very close to the accommodation part of Ushaw, in the disabled/accessible parking spots to unload luggage, if needed, then re-park in the visitors car park 5 minutes walk away: There is a great pub very close by (walking distance): Although rooms are not serviced, there are tea & coffee making facilities in the rooms, and you can ask for anything you need: It is approx 2 miles to the nearest park & ride , which I would recommend for visiting Durham: There is a lift to the first floor accommodation : Bells chime throughout the day but are silenced at night.
Lovely location. We came for the Wedding Dress exhibition which was fabulous- until we got to the royal replicas! They were terribly displayed on horrible mannequins which really took away from the dresses. We had lunch in the cafe which was very tasted and great value for money. All staff, especially Cafe staff were extremely helpful and accommodating.
