Made in Dundee | One Mill | Many Stories Verdant Works is a world-class visitor attraction which tells the story of Dundee's industrial textile heritage and social history in the atmospheric setting of a beautifully refurbished Mill building that dates from 1833.
Superb interactive museum which explains an important part of Dundee's manufacturing history. You can spend hours here and not see everything. Useful, spacious (ticket inclusive) parking. Good cafe (tea/coffee/soup/lunch etc). Good value for money. A grand day out.
A great place to visit if you're in Dundee. We bought a joint ticket with Discovery Point access, which made it good value too. It's a good couple of hours to get round, and it's really interesting learning about the rise and fall of their jute industry. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable, and it was great to see the machines running and follow the process through.
Fascinating museum about Dundee's industrial past. A great section on the jute manufacturing process, complete with machines and reenactments, along with a smaller section focusing on the lives of the people who worked here. The museum itself is tucked away in an old industrial area, so it can feel like you're heading to the middle of nowhere, but once you arrive staff are friendly and the tearoom delicious!
Fantastic. Learn all about how jute is grown in India and why it then came to Dundee and became such an important industry. The Verdant Works was built in 1833 and by 1864 had 70 power looms and 2,800 spindles and was employing 500 workers involved in spinning and weaving jute. The industry employed 50,000 in the city at its peak. By 1889 though this mills time as a true textile works is over. The staff are friendly and helpful and it was lovely to see some of the machines working and be able to ask questions. See the architecture of the building from the viewing platforms and enjoy the different displays and the mighty 1801 steam beam engine. There's also a lovely cafe and gift shop though it would have been good to see some more jute made items. We got a combined ticket with Discovery which made it extra good value. Free parking next door for visitors.
This is a fantastic museum. Really interesting, lots to see, very interactive. The main hall is absolutely stunning and a credit to those involved in reproducing it. Shout out to the wonderful volunteer who showed us the Boulton and Watt engine in action and gave us lots of interesting additional information. We were very impressed. A definite must visit.
We visited this museum not knowing what to expect. What a brilliant place to visit. The staff when we arrived were very friendly and welcoming. The building is well set out and it has a wide range of information. We stayed for a cup of tea and again the staff were very helpful, had a brilliant sense of humour and the food was lovely and fresh. Well done everyone.
