Vindolanda is a Roman archaeological site located near Bardon Mill, Northumberland, England. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important archaeological sites on Hadrian's Wall. The site features the remains of a Roman fort and settlement, including barracks, granaries, and temples, as well as a museum showcasing artifacts found during excavations. Visitors can explore the excavated ruins, see Roman artifacts, and learn about the history of the Roman occupation in Britain.
Lovely afternoon spent wandering around the Roman ruins and dig sites, surprised how big the place is, there's also a fair sized museum with lots of items dug up over the years on display (Fascinating stuff!). Fair sized car park, toilets, cafe and a small shop all on site and a great entry price, definitely worth a visit.
Excellent Roman settlement especially if you get the opportunity to join Helen's free guided tour lasting about 45 minutes. Museum displays fascinating and lovely grounds to enjoy lunch or afternoon tea.
Wow! Missed this one the last time I came back. The museum and cafe area were both fantastic. The site is beautiful, and it was very cool to see the excavators working the site. The staff were wonderful!
Fantastic place to visit. The museum collection is outstanding. It was amazing to think that the sandals had once been worn by Romans! The fort is extensive although the information boards could have been better. The wooden reconstruction will keep the kids happy too
Remains of a Roman fort and adjacent village. Understood to be the third fort built at this location. Archeological digs still in progress, but not on the day of the visit. Good information boards indicating the former uses of the buildings. Visited on a very wet day. Would recommend going on a dry day as there are no covered areas apart from the reception building.
Amazing Roman site! Insightful tour guide, great museum and cafe. Fascinating to see how these people lived nearly 2000 years ago.
