Wakehurst is Kew's wild botanic garden in Sussex, with over 500 acres of dramatic landscape. Discover beautiful ornamental gardens, temperate woodlands and a nature reserve teeming with wildlife. At the heart of Wakehurst is the world's largest wild seed conservation project, the Millennium Seed Bank.
Stunning grounds, over 500 acres. Lots of walks to follow, in order to see the different parts of the grounds. Although the mansion house is closed, due to significant roof works, the cafe, restaurant, shop & beautiful gardens are all available. A very tranquil day out, which I would definitely recommend.
Beautiful, peaceful, a nice combination of a perfect English garden, old huge pine tree forest, a meadow, a few ponds. Plenty of spaces to seat and enjoy the nature. A few walks. A nice cafe and a very tasty ice cream. I liked it so much that ended up buying a membership for PS35. The entrance is PS8 after 3:30 (PS14 or PS16 before). Parking is PS12 if over 2h, and you will need more time! Make sure you leave no later than 40min after the closing time - they lock the car park area.
It was late June when we visited Wakehurst National Trust. It is a large area and one would need several visits to cover everything. The manor house was closed, having its roof repaired and the whole building was covered in scaffolding. But they had cleverly built a viewing platform at the top of the scaffolds which gave great panoramic views of much of the gardens. I suppose the best time to visit would be earlier, in May or early June with more blossom, or autumn with colourful trees. But all summer there will be much to enjoy.
Extensive, immaculately maintained gardens with a vast array of plant varieties on display. From ornamental walled gardens and an American prairie garden, to lush water gardens and Asian heath gardens, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Sculptures and information boards around the gardens provide more to see. I'd particularly recommend the landscaped water gardens with the coloured rhododendrons and irises in spring and early summer. The house wasn't open when I visited as it was undergoing roof repairs. There's a cafe, large gift and garden shop and accessible toilets on site. Ample parking is available (PS7.00 per vehicle when I visited, and still charged for National Trust members). Check the website for the latest opening times.
Brilliant place to visit in the summer. Lovely gardens and things to do. It's large so all sorts of nice walks you can take. They are refurbishing the garden Building, I can't wait to see what It looks like when done. Worth a visit during summer
Despite the wind and drizzle the grandchildren had a wonderful time exploring all the different parts of the garden. There is so much to see and definitely needs more than a day.
