This medieval gatehouse and bridge is a striking feature of Waltham Abbey, a historic monastery in Essex, England. The 12th-century gatehouse is adorned with intricate stone carvings and features a grand arched entrance, while the adjacent bridge spans the River Lea, offering picturesque views of the surrounding countryside.
Nice area to visit. Said to be a possible resting place of King Harold. On site car park reasonably priced.
Lovely place to walk around not much of it left but the church is well worth a look in but isn't always open. The sign said 10-4 while visiting today Wednesday in February King Harold's head stone is just behind the church. Parking is PS1.10 for an hour and is situated behind the Abbey ruins plenty of space.
Some nice old ruins. Not a lot left of the abbey after Henry 8 smashed it up.
Beautiful, peaceful, tranquil and stunning scenery and Abbey. The garden is massive and full of beautiful flowers and scenery, which circles the Abbey. The Abbey was beautiful, inside and out, the building and art makes Waltham Abbey stand out.
What a relaxing park and gardens.. well maintained and not busy at all... awesome place to grab a book and enjoy some quiet time
Great place to come for walks and a bit of history. The Abbey was dissolved in 1540. It was the last monastic house in England to be surrendered to the Crown. Although, you can still see 14th century gatehouse and bridge that remains, as well as the walls of the post-medieval house that was built following its dissolution. We have visited in early evening and it still managed to see the beauty of this area, especially with all Christmas lights, which added extra magical feeling to it. Lots of ducks in the river minding their business. :) Beautiful garden. Lots of places to eat and shops. The car park is next to Waltham Abbey Gardens and is PS1 first hour and afterwards PS2 up to 24 hours. Nice place to bring your furry friends too!
