The Washington "F" Pit is a former coal mine that has been converted into a museum and heritage center. It features a preserved coal mine pithead and winding engine, as well as exhibits showcasing the history of coal mining in the region. Visitors can take a guided tour of the pit and learn about the lives of coal miners and their families. The site also includes a recreated coal miner's village, with cottages and a chapel, giving a glimpse into the community that once thrived there.
A small museum l, but well worth seeing. Some great explanations about the area and how it all worked. Fantastic to see the enormous winding engine turning over.
Washington F Pit is well worth a visit. The museum staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable and go out of their way to make sure everyone enjoys their visit.
Lovely building wish it was open pic's from the inside look great
Visited for the first time yesterday. (21/9) Was very impressed with the exhibits. Especially the engine for the winding gear.
The now museum stands testament to the people who gelled put the North East on the map. A time before the European Union where Great Britain had much to offer by way of trade. Sadly the museum is only open seasonally but it's worth a visit just to see the well maintained engine that took our brave miners down almost a mile for coal.
Fantastic exhibition... Many thanks to Sean for the information about the F Pit
