The Waterloo Monument is a 203-foot-tall granite monument that commemorates the Battle of Waterloo, where British forces led by the Duke of Wellington defeated Napoleon's French army in 1815. Located in Aldershot, Hampshire, the monument was designed by architect Barron and built between 1830 and 1832. The structure features a large stone column topped with a bronze statue of a duke, surrounded by four smaller columns and a viewing platform that offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Not too far a walk from the carpark (free) to the monument, but it is a steep and uneven climb. The steps within the monument are quite steep, with no handrail and it is reasonably dark inside (torch/phone light recommend). No barrier/railings at the top so wouldn't take dogs up or allow children to be unsupervised. Well worth the effort as views from the top are amazing.
Steep climb from the village -npt for the front hearted. Not for anyone needing support as the steps and steepness at points are challenging. ( This is from a relatively fit 37 year old (run 20km+ a week) ). The path up from the back 3nd by the timber yard is easier though and we walked down this way. The tower is open and you can climb to the top although it is unsealed at the top so you don't want to let dogs or children up unattended. The steps within the tower are also very steep too. Cool though and amazing to access a tower view pou t without charge or boring safety restrictions!
Good steep walk up to the monument. Steps inside the monument are dark and a very low wall at the top
Is a 15-20 min hike. Please wear hiking boots and would avoid going if it's raining as the area is very muddy. There is no barriers so if you slip it could be bad. You can climb up the tower however it has not been restored so no handrail or anything to assist you getting up there. Would take a torch/use your phone torch as you can't see the steps going up otherwise. Views from the top are amazing :)
A lovely place to visit. You can do this as part of a short or long walk. Beautiful scenery and the view from the top of the tower is fab. It is dark so worth taking a torch. Be careful when wet. There is no hand rail up the tower or from the top.
Great views from the top of the monument. You can do a nice and easy circular walk following the gravel path. But if you want to make it more challenging there is a steep rocky mountainpath going up as well.
