This museum showcases the history and heritage of Weardale, a valley in County Durham, with exhibits on lead mining, agriculture, and village life. The museum is housed in a 17th-century chapel, High House Chapel, which features stunning stained-glass windows and a tranquil atmosphere.
Interesting place, well worth a visit, doesn't open in the mornings. Upstairs is a genealogy department. The chapel itself is amazing, you can imagine the fervour of those early Wesleyan congregations and yet there is such peace there as well. Still used today.
Warm welcome.. fascinating artifacts from a way of life long gone but within living memory each with its own fascinating story. Good wishes for the exciting plans for the future .
Very interesting local museum with a friendly informative volunteer. We especially liked the social history of the Weardale people. Artifacts in the living room were fascinating and we particularly liked the the WW1 exhibit and the excellent tapestry done by the very talented local ladies. As a group from Durham, we learned a lot about the history of Weardale and it's people. Good luck with the plans to move to bigger premises!!
