The Wellington Monument stands as a tribute to the Duke of Wellington and his victory at the Battle of Waterloo. Its prominent location on top of Wellington Hill, on the edge of the Blackdown Hills, has led it to become a symbolic marker on a journey within the local area and to the wider South West. In contrast to other memorials to the Duke, the Wellington Monument has a more informal countryside setting. It can be approached along a path lined with beech hedgerows and is surrounded by a wildlife rich meadow. This is an ideal place for a picnic or to fly a kite. A one mile walk taking in the surrounding area is a rewarding way to see the beautiful Blackdown views.
Fab walk from carpark to see the monument through woodland so sheltered from sun. Parking is national trust and unless you are a member payable. Gorgeous wild flowers around it too. Great views with trig point to help interpret.
Recently restored, now managed by the National Trust. It's possible to go all the way up and it's PS5 each. Children above 1mt are allowed up but it's not an easy climb as it's very narrow and it's over 200 steps. A maximum of 3 people are allowed at the same time and you get 30 min, so it's preferable to book ahead or wait for a free slot. The volunteers are absolutely brilliant and provide you with a walkie talkie for everyone that goes up. The ground around the monument has several benches. There's a paying car park. Bring water if you are planning to visit as there aren't any shops nearby.
Lovely walk. Level and plenty of seating along the walk. Free parking for disabled blue badge holders and national trust members who scan their membership card. Had a great visit. My 4 star rating is only because the view from the monument would of been fantastic but the trees hid most of the views. We regularly visit Coombe Hill in Buckinghamshire and the views from there are fantastic so I was hoping for something similar here. Lovely views from the road down to the A38 though.
Great place to visit didn't realise you can walk round it and the views are superb
In the heart of the Blackdown Hills is the fabulous memorial to the Duke of Wellington for his victory at Waterloo, the tallest 3 sided obelisk in the world..! With great walks and views of the countryside, and Wales on a clear day...!
Lovely walk, with some great views, would definitely recommend to anyone who is visiting the area, there's also some walks that drop in behind the Monument, it is quite steep in places! Wasn't too busy when I visited but everyone was friendly and majority were walking dogs
