Wells & Mendip Museum tells the story of the Mendip landscape and its inhabitants, with a large selection of geological and archaeological specimens, and social history artefacts. The museum has a library of historical volumes, maps and family history resources available for the public to use, and is home to the Wells City Archives. The museum's own extensive collections can be used by researchers (by prior arrangement with the curator). There is also a gift shop selling a range of items, from gifts to local interest books. Several rooms and the landscaped walled garden are available to hire for events and exhibitions. We are an Accredited Museum under the Arts Council Accreditation Scheme and a registered charity.
Great little museum with lots to see packed into an historic house, well worth the cheap admission fee.
I made purely a museum visit, whilst there are frequently art exhibitions and activities held here. Delightful old school museum, mainly centred round the pioneering and lifelong archaeological work of Herbert Balch its founder. Very nice experience for adults and perhaps older children. All sorts included from geology and prehistory to local 'byegones' like a miniature replica of a Victorian antique shop and a display about an early photography studio. Wonderful icthyosaur fossil on the way in. I was not enamoured of the WW1 trench with dummies and recorded sounds, it seemed out of place to me, but loved the rest.
Great rock collection from Herbert Balch, the founder of the museum. Building and improvement work, funded by a Lottery Heritage Fund Grant has finished, with two upstairs galleries remodeled. Definitely a Five Star local museum, with great short exhibitions of local interest, some access problems for those who has any mobility issues due to the building being Grade 2 Listed, though.
Excellent little local museum with a Smashed in the Cellar ceramics and Wookey Hole Witch special exhibitions on right now as well as Stone/Bronze/Iron Age displays, ecclesiastical items, fossils, second world war items etc etc. Reasonably priced. Opposite the Cathedral.
Museum is quite small but has some interesting exhibits. The exhibition on the Wells Asylum was very informative
Lovely little museum that is well worth the PS4 entrance fee. The World War 1 trench exhibit is a must for those with young children. While the shops of Wells High Street exhibition is a welcome look at the past for everyone. The 18th and 19th century samplers are fascinating, but you'll need a torch because they are kept in semi-darkness to avoid the natural dyes fading. The volunteers were friendly, polite and willing to help with any questions and chatted with us as if we were old friends.(30/4/22)
