Nestled at the foot of the South Downs, West Dean Gardens is one of the greatest restored gardens open to the public today. Visitors can explore a wide range of historic features on a gentle walk around the grounds. From surreal trees to the restored walled garden and Victorian glasshouses, West Dean Gardens proudly presents its rich creative and social heritage.
1st ever visit today and loved it. Different to other gardens. The Victorian greenhouses are very interesting and full of different plants. The 100m pergola was packed with plants growing up it and loved the gardens by the pond and the little bridges. The long parkland walk was worth the long gradual climb as the Rhododendrons at the top were spectacular and do many of them and nor another soul about. Definitely recommend a visit.
This is not just one garden but a whole series of different spaces and gardens that could keep you busy all day. The obvious show stopper is the walled garden with the immaculate glass houses and hot boarder. Second stop is the dramatic pergola but for me hidden down a path past the orangery was a beautiful gravel garden next to a free flowing stream crossed by small bridges. Had we not had a heatwave I would have loved to complete the perimeter walk and look forward to returning when it's cooler! I do agree with other reviews that a paper map is essential as trying to see any map on a phone is impossible with poor eyesight.
Good place for ramblings and long walks. Map should have been provided as we were unaware where we were around the grounds. OK of you were close by, but the woodland walk could have had a bit more guidance. Tea and cake were nice. Will visit again.
This garden is more than incredible! An outstanding walled garden starts your visit and then it's off to the pergola with 100 meters of vines in glorious bloom in the spring and summer. Be sure to make it all the way down past the college to the spring garden and streamside plantings. They're so inspiring!
Many years since my last visit. And since I loved last time, my expectations were sky high. And yet it still impressed and inspired me greatly! The pergola/arch is magnificent and brought me to tears!
