The West Highland Way is a 96-kilometer long-distance footpath that runs from Milngavie to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. The trail passes through some of Scotland's most breathtaking landscapes, including Loch Lomond, Rannoch Moor, and Glencoe. Along the way, hikers can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains, lochs, and glens, as well as spot local wildlife such as red deer, golden eagles, and ospreys. The trail takes most walkers around 5-7 days to complete, with overnight stops in picturesque villages and towns such as Drymen, Rowardennan, and Kinlochleven. The West Highland Way is considered one of Scotland's most iconic and challenging long-distance walks, with steep ascents, rocky terrain, and unpredictable weather conditions. However, the scenery and sense of accomplishment make it a rewarding and unforgettable experience for those who take on the challenge.
Second time walking the WHW. Completed it last year and started it this year. The town of Milngavie did a great job at the start of the walk. There are easily marked signs and a really nice metal progression chart. Great job Milngavie
I love the west highland way, it's a simple yet enjoyable trek with plenty of good spots. It can be enjoyed by amateurs and experienced hikers alike, and can be taken at slow or fast speeds as appropriate to the hiker. It's really good I'd recommend highly.
HOGSWEED!!! I'm not sure why I did not see it mentioned, maybe the direction I went but it stopped my entire hike dead in its tracks.. had to go to the dr, bless Scotland for free healthcare, prescriptions, free too. And then pain like I've never felt before, burning, pins and needles, swollen etc. Wear gloves and cover your skin! I was disappointed it ruined my hike and I had to stop but for what i did see.. so beautiful, I'm so heartbroken I couldn't finish!! Get compeed (duoderm) and cover those feet!! The woman in the oak tree village shop called it, said it was likely the hogsweed, called the dr in Drymen and was so helpful.
The West Highland Way was a stunning long-distance hiking trail that spans across the Scottish Highlands, offering breathtaking views of the rugged landscape and picturesque villages. I recently completed the trail, starting from Milngavie and ending in Fort William, and I must say it was an unforgettable experience. The path we took, starting from Milngavie and ending in Fort William, was a seven-days experience, well-planned and provided us with a great mix of challenging hikes, stunning scenery, and comfortable accommodations. Overall, I would highly recommend the West Highland Way to anyone looking for a challenging but rewarding hiking adventure in the Scottish Highlands. It was truly an unforgettable experience that I will cherish for years to come.
Starting in the well-equipped southern-end town of Milngavie, with banks, train station, cafes and the M&S food hall for supplies. I guess that some people never make it north out of Milngavie!! Happy walking.
We cycled the origional route which did not include any of the easier diversions. Great route but you do need an high level of fitness and Stamina. Be prepared to carry your bike for many miles and hike it over the toughest terrain you could ever imagine.
