Victorian museum with archaeology and natural and social history exhibits, plus temporary displays.
Visited here recently with family members, never tried it before. I can say it's an excellent venue especially for youngsters. They will love it. Free admission also. Catch up on local history as well as ancient animals and historical artifacts. Would recommend for any parents with their children, young or teenagers. Lots of open space in Weston Park outside also. Ideally located close to Sheffield University and on local bus routes.
Having moved to Sheffield 49 years ago I used to visit the museum quite frequently but having moved away I thought I would revisit to see the bees and the seismograph. Sadly they weren't there but the Polar Bear was. Seriously I had a great time in the museum and the Cafe was nice too!
First is free, second great information about Sheffield history and lovely nature exhibitions so, really worth seeing. Just too small, I would mind if it is the size of the London or Edinburgh museum
Cafe and shop were very good but the exhibits were excellent....well displayed and something for all ages. Interactive displays for children. Explanations were clear and well written. Sheffield through the ages, along with fascinating exhibits is well worth a visit...essentially free but voluntary donations were given without any pressure.
Loved the new Sheffield Rivers exhibition... I need to go again to make sure I didn't miss anything! From walking a lot along the Porter Brook you can begin to appreciate the role Sheffield's rivers have had on its history, so it was nice to see it recognised by this museum.
A museum in Sheffield City centre. Surrounded by well maintained gardens, beautiful displays of flowers, and plenty of places, perfect for a picnic or for kids to have fun. Weston Park is a wonderful place to visit on a warm day. A small lake is complete with a flock of ducks, makes for an idyllic place to walk, and forget about the real world for a while. The museum itself is a building dating back almost 150 years, and it is the oldest museum in the city. The inside is divided into several sections, including a detailed history of Sheffield itself, a section devoted to archaeological finds within the city, another focused on wildlife, including the famous Spike the woolly Rhino. There is also a showcase on ancient Egypt with an excellent collection of artefacts. Temporary displays are also frequent additions to the museum. The current one is all about hair. This may seem an odd choice, but I can assure you, it's very interesting. The museum itself is free, but donations are welcomed. The museum has a gift shop, and there are a handful of places in the area to grab a drink or perhaps a snack. Either the 52 or 52a bus will take you from Sheffield Cathedral to the park for just a few pounds. All in all, Weston Park and Museum is a great place to visit with the family, especially on a budget, and is easily one of the most tranquil parts of the city.
