The Westray Heritage Trust is a museum located on the island of Westray, Orkney Islands, Scotland. It showcases the history and culture of Westray, with exhibits on the island's archaeology, natural history, and social history. The museum features displays on the island's Neolithic past, including artifacts from the nearby ancient settlement of Noltland Castle. It also explores the island's maritime heritage, with exhibits on fishing, sailing, and shipwrecks. Additionally, the museum highlights the island's unique wildlife, including seabirds, seals, and other marine life. The trust also manages the nearby Noltland Castle, a 16th-century fortified house that offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Visiting this great little centre on Westray is a must. Its so well layed out with island history and life. If the weather is good your visit may be quick but you will still find plenty of interesting information if the weather is poor you can extend your time to read even more. The Westray Venus is fascinating to see and hear about.
A superb opportunity to explore the rich history of Westray and it's place within the Orkney group of islands. Static and interactive displays with a wonderful range of research material available so this should satisfy every level of interest. Lots of personal accounts and artefacts add a real sense of the life of people living there and how they were educated, worked and experienced life on a truly beautiful island. Thanks to Mary for giving us some grand information.
A lovely little centre with a lot of archives available which is great for anyone that likes to go into great detail to understand the history of Westray. It also has plenty of information easily presented in a simple format for people who just want a more casual and less specific experience. We particularly loved the set of bones outside the centre and the friendly member of staff at the desk.
Great little Heritage Centre. Very small but absolutely packed with fascinating information and displays and the lady there is absolutley lovely! There's lovely little gifts to be bought from here including scarves made from the softest wool I've ever felt in my life! There is a small, clean toilet available to customers which includes a baby change too. If you're in Westray you definitley need to pop in for a visit :)
Really fantastic. A great inspiration for other small island trusts, this place is small but perfectly formed, with great archive facilities and some very interesting exhibits (not to mention the world-famous Westray wife!). Also something you wouldn't expect to notice as much but a really well kept building- the gardens outside are beautiful and add to the feeling that it's a well looked after place.
What an impressive centre - informative, interactive, and most of all, interesting. I would have to say the is the best community museum/gallery centre I've ever seen. Well worth the visit - congratulations to the staff and members of the Westray community who created and maintain WHT.
