This 12th-century castle ruin features a large stone keep, curtain walls, and a surrounding moat, showcasing the architectural style of the medieval period.
Beautiful location. A place with vibes and well worth a visit. If you are looking for amenities, gift/coffee shop you will be disappointed. 3/4 of a mile down a narrow track and you come an 18th century improvement farm, boarded up. The farmhouse is gorgeous, the setting is stunning. Footings for outbuildings are around it. Carry on to the ruins of St Martin's Church. The Outlines of the village houses are all that remain and these surround the farmhouse and church. The fishpond beyond is where the mill house stood. Once upon a time this must have been a prosperous and thriving community. Now it it is a silent echo of the distant past. Wear walking boots, bring a picnic, take your rubbish back with you. Enjoy, solitude, peace and extreme beauty.
Bit of a trek down to the Church, but it's a beautiful bit of the countryside and if the sun is shining and birds are singing, then I can't think of a more pleasant way to spend a few hours. Reading the information plaques is essential to get an idea of what you are looking at and it was fascinating to see the changes in the architecture. Well worth a visit especially if you're into architecture and history A cup of tea tastes amazing after the slow climb back up to the car Enjoy!
A really interesting and intriguing place, where so much has been discovered from the archaeological discoveries that took place. Finding out about the types of buildings and what would have been the type of people living in this deserted village.
