Dig deep and discover the special ingredient in your everyday life that still shapes Cornwall and the world today...china clay! Immerse yourself in the atmospheric grounds of the original Victorian clay works, bursting at the seams with tools, machinery, artefacts and stories. Discover Wheal Martyn's past life at the heart of this global industry. Hear real life tales of the industry which shaped the landscape and iconic 'Cornish Alps', and of the people in mid-Cornwall and beyond, whose lives were shaped by this 'white gold'. Find out about Cornwall's largest mining industry, past and present, and catch a glimpse of modern machines in the working clay pit.
A fascinating place to visit. The clay works has easy accessible parking and good facilities on site. There is much to see and explore here so plan to spend a few hours checking out the site. There's a nice walk around the grounds with a viewing point and afterwards the cafe is a good place for a rest stop. Food appears to be stopped being served after around 3pm although the cafe is open until 5pm which is worth being aware of. If you're in the area I'd recommend a visit.
Enjoyable day out walking around the Clay Works - was quite informative too. Staff were friendly and helpful. Great place to also bring the dog - allowed inside and out, with a really great outdoor walk with amazing views. Don't know if it's always the case but it was also not too busy which was nice.
Very informative walkthrough museum section before a huge outside selection of trails and views. The site is looked after and had enough to keep my two boys (13 and 11) occupied for a good few hours.
We were lucky to have beautiful weather, We enjoyed the Clay works museum/cave absolutely loved the slate painting and Gold panning, plus the walk in the fairy woods. The bird feeding station was a delight to sit and watch for anyone keen on birds. Also a lovely little treasure trove shop. The staff were delightful. We managed to make a day of it.
Great museum- very interactive cafe is excellent. Brilliant for kids we spent several hours here
A great place to visit to learn the history of clay mining and processing. A family day out with plenty to interest all ages. Very dog friendly so long as your 4 legged companion is well behaved, naturally. The walk to the pit top is well worth it for the views of a working quarry. Can recommend the on-site cafe for a good selection of meals or snacks. Plenty of parking.
