Welcome to England's only true mountain forest. Whinlatter is home to stunning views, fantastic walks, exhilarating mountain biking, rare wildlife and adventure play. Set within the Lake District, a World Heritage Site, Whinlatter has unrivalled views across Bassenthwaite Lake, Derwentwater and Keswick. It is also home to the longest purpose-built mountain bike trails in the Lake District. The Lakes are a dramatic and unique landscape which has been formed through man's activities, such as forestry and land management. This landscape has inspired many of the world's greatest artists, writers and thinkers.
One of the best forest walks in England, the track is mostly made of compacted stones following the WOW trail (blue signed). Navigating in an all terrain wheelchair or scooter is an ideal way to explore the forest and it's peaceful scenery. There are some very steep bits which are just about possible in an all terrain wheelchair or scooter. The view points are a must and well worth the extra effort to experience. Took us about 2.5Hours to complete the WOW trail which was an achievement in a wheelchair! Highly recommended if you're in the Lake District
What a stunning place this is! If you can get off the beaten track away from the main area its even more stunning, you can make the walk as long as you want (9 miles for us) so long as you have a good O/S map or similar, there are dozens of tracks NOT shown on the tourist boards, my only complaints are there was a LOT of tracks closed that should have been open a month ago and the parking charges are astronomical at PS10 for around 4 hours or more.
Great park to walk and bike. Very beautiful and clean. Varied trails are suitable for walkers of all abilities, definitely something for everyone. There were trails suitable for mobility scooters. There are also plenty of fun looking bike trails. All trails have an average time that needs to be taken and describes the terrain so you can make your choice. There is adequate parking, a bit pricey, but places like these need adequate maintenance, and that costs money, so we were happy with that in mind. Toilets. Cafe. Visitors shop & information. Go Ape is also on site. it looks like fun.
Absolutely beautiful forest with incredible views and several different walks you can go on varying in distance / time. Small gift shop, cafe and toilets by the car park with friendly staff. Only let down is the car park on site was expensive, PS2.50 for the first hour and 55p every 15 minutes after, so if you plan on a long walk or bike ride it won't be cheap. But the time is still worth it. Parking is ANPR pay as you leave the site.
I had high hopes for the WOW trail in Whinlatter Forest, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to expectations. The trail felt underwhelming, lacking the connection and awe I was hoping for. Perhaps it was the wide path that made it feel more like a road than a scenic hike, with a steep slope on one side and an uphill climb on the other. Instead of feeling immersed in nature, it felt more like driving through in a car. While it's certainly pleasant for a daily walk with the dogs, it lacks the "wow" factor and breathtaking views that I was expecting. On another note, our experience in Scotland's Glencoe was truly unforgettable and breathtaking. Every pass, every trail in the Glencoe range is a "wow" factor in itself. The scenery is absolutely stunning, with each step revealing more of the majestic forestry landscape, and majestic mountains. It's the kind of place that leaves you in awe at every turn, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking an extraordinary outdoor adventure.
Great place to visit. We did the 'wow' route, which was a good walk (about 2 hours), it is worth going to the viewpoint. The car park is a little expensive, but considering there is no entrance fee it is worth it. The cafe has lovely food and drinks which was very welcome after the walk.
