Located off the coast of Sandown, Isle of Wight, Wild Cat Island is a small, uninhabited island with a rich history and diverse wildlife. The island is a haven for seabirds, with species such as cormorants, guillemots, and gulls nesting on its rocky shores. Its rugged landscape is characterized by steep cliffs, hidden coves, and sandy beaches.
Awesome little island, we spent the night here and was so quite and peacful after about 9pm when everyone had left... we did jumping from the rocks in the lake and had an amazing time.
What a magical place! Famous Island in Arthur Ransome's "Swallows and Amazons", Peel Island is known as "Wild Cat Island" in the book. We canoed here from a small woodland parking area on the East road alongside the lake (Dodgson Wood carpark) ~ about 0.6 miles away, North along the road. Rigg Wood carpark is even closer to the island. Some parking areas had been blocked off by the council after some inconsiderate parking - we found these small parking areas open at the time, however. We managed to find the Secret Harbour without too much trouble ;-) Picnic'd near our canoe then explored the island (see video for "Entering the Secret Harbour). The craggy island has different levels and viewpoints. Much more to it than we expected. Plenty of photo opportunities for the surrounding hills & lake from here. We've paddled further South from the Island, down to the River Crake (search Google Maps). We didn't travel too far along the River, but it's a pretty diversion if you've the time to take a look. A must-visit Island if you have a boat.
Awesome place, can camp but there are often other campers there.
This is not Wild Cat Island. That is over in Windermere, and is called Blake Holme. The fictional Wild Cat does have bits of other islands in it. The harbour at the south of this island was taken and put at the south end of Wild Cat. The navigation works exactly the same, and if you look, you can see where people have driven nails into the trees to hang and re-create the navigation lights. Well worth a visit for Swallows and Amazons fans. Five stars for the harbour.
Brilliant little island, I have canoed over to the island numerous times, always great for a lunch stop and pre lunch swim
Great little island for a chill and a swim. It's also ok to be fully in the nude here
