Wincobank Hill Fort is an Iron Age hillfort situated on a prominent hill overlooking the surrounding countryside in Somerset, England. The fort is roughly oval in shape, measuring approximately 180 meters by 120 meters, and is surrounded by a single rampart and ditch. The rampart is constructed from earth and stone, with a height of up to 2 meters in some areas. The fort's entrance is on the eastern side, where a causeway crosses the ditch. The interior of the fort is relatively flat, with some slight undulations, and is dotted with several modern monuments and memorials. Despite being partially destroyed by agriculture and excavation, the fort remains an impressive and intriguing archaeological site, offering insight into the lives of ancient Britons.
Good place but you cannot see sunrise or sunset because of trees
Awesome view of Sheffield, but also scary at the same time. Try to go there as a group. Don't go there alone, not safe I think.
A much under used and historically significant area showing the areas tactical dominance over the don valley through the centuries. Great woodland area with paths and fantastic panoramic views, especially on the south side of the fort walls, which on a clear day you can see from Lincolnshire to the east, round to the peak District in the west.
A lovely historical walk. How many people have walked these ancient paths. You stand where the hillfort was and can see for miles. Strategic place for the fort to be. Young kids will love it as lots of paths to explore. Great for walking the dog.
Lovely area for moderate walking and views of the city
The area is full of ancient history but also has some of the best views around Sheffield. It really is worth the short 5 minute walk up from the top of Jenkin Road and there are plenty of paths to take to extend the route.
