Woodburn Forest Upper Car Park is a scenic parking area nestled within the picturesque Woodburn Forest in the United Kingdom. The car park offers stunning views of the surrounding woodland, with towering trees and vibrant foliage creating a tranquil atmosphere. A network of walking trails and footpaths radiate from the car park, inviting visitors to explore the forest's hidden gems, including sparkling streams, hidden glades, and ancient woodland features. The car park itself is well-maintained, with ample parking spaces and basic amenities, making it an ideal starting point for a day of forest exploration.
Car park is small, maybe suitable for 30 cars. Surface is rough stones no bay markings. It's the gateway to fantastic trails in the forest and reservoirs beyond. Popular with dog walkers so be vigilant for the first 200yards.
Lovely place for a walk, but need good walking boots and good coat. You can walk round the middle dam very easily. The top dam is VERY lucky. The bottom dam isn't to bad! There is a car park at the top of the hill beside a church and from there you can walk about 800m to the middle dam, its about 2000m round the dam and from there you can see the top and middle dams. On a good day it is a lovely walk but a bit exposed in parts on a windy day. Over the weekend it is a very popular place with dog walkers. There is also a car park at the bottom dam and you can walk up the left or right hand side of the dam. Both are a bit mucky, don't try this walk without good walking shoes, oh and bring a camera!!!
There are 3 reservoirs within Woodburn Forest. The lower carpark leads you to the lower reservoir which is small and cannot easily be walked around fully due to boggy parts of ground. The upper carpark leads you to the middle and upper reservoirs which are much larger. The middle one has a path the whole way around and serves as a lovely walk with great views. There are other paths throughout the forest; some flat, some stony. Decent footwear is highly recommended. The whole area is very popular with dog walkers, so don't be surprised if wet paws come your way. There are no public facilities as the land is owned by the Water Service. There are waste bins at both carparks but not within the forest itself.
A wonderful place to walk and enjoy a little peace and quiet, just a few minutes drive from Carrickfergus town centre. There are a number of good stoned paths, along with some grass paths which tend to be a bit muddy, and there are some forest trails which are usually dry and covered in leaf litter. You can walk around the edge of the upper reservoir, although the path is extremely muddy in a number of sections, and is probably best avoided in wet weather unless you've got walking boots on. The middle reservoir is surrounded by excellent stoned paths, and although you may find the occasional puddle or muddy section, these shouldn't be too much of a problem to skirt round. The lower reservoir can be walked around, and while one side has benefited from a new stone path and little timber bridges, the other side is a grass path which will be be muddy in all but the driest weather. Again, it's not a problem of you're in walking boots, but if you're just out for a stroll in your Sunday best, I'd avoid it and stick to a loop of the middle reservoir. It's dissapointing that so many people allow their dogs to foul the paths and don't lift it, so be careful where you walk, especially on the first few hundred metres along the path from the car park. Some other dog owners do bag their pet waste up, but seem to leave it sitting all over the place. It doesn't really spoil the walk, but there's just no need for it. This would be great place for walking with kids, even if it's with prams or strollers. Disabled users in a wheel chair could certainly get around the middle reservoir, but the main path, down to and back up might be a difficult. If you go in the mornings, you'll escape the worst of the midges and other flying/biting insects, whereas in the evening, they'll be out in full force.
So beautiful. Should have worn walking boots as quite muddy in places but it was really enjoyable. A very picturesque spot and a good walk
Great place to get away from it for an hour or so. My best time is just after sun up when only a few are out and about.
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
