Underrated museum that really needs to make sure it isn't forgotten about! Informative panels about the mine workings buildings...and people!!!! Fantastic gallery sections in the newer building with great audio visual effects and thought provoking art works by the miners and good displays on the miner's strikes and the effects.
Great visit. It was once a working mine and there's so much information about the history of the site. There's a lovely art gallery and a cafe for refreshments. Highly recommended if you want to learn some local history. There's also quite a lot of information about the miners strike in 1984.
The site as an ex-coalmine with a new visitor centre which also houses the Nortumbrian Archives. The museum is excellently presented and engaging about the story of coal and coalmining. It could have been really boring but wasn't. There are a number of the original mine buildings around the site and some of these have good displays about what their purpose was. They also have some guided tours which I am sure show you a lot more. There is a decent cafe on site as well. If you need more exercise then you can directly walk into the country park that is next door.
This is an excellent museum. Informative and evocative it tells of the life of pitmen and their families through a variety of media. In places it brought tears to my eyes.
Focused primarily on Coal Mining in the North East, and showed how people lived due to the magnitude of this industry. Shared knowledge of the Community and how the industry affected the families and their supporting roles.
Great visit to Woodhorn Museum, lots to see and great place to spend a few hours, good quality cafe and very accessible throughout.
