Worlebury Hillfort is an Iron Age hillfort situated on a hill overlooking the River Severn in Gloucestershire, England. The fort is roughly oval in shape, measuring approximately 300 meters by 200 meters, and is surrounded by a single rampart and ditch. The hillfort is believed to have been occupied from the 5th century BCE to the 1st century CE, and its strategic location would have provided a strong defensive position. Archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of roundhouses, granaries, and other structures, as well as artifacts such as pottery, coins, and metalwork. Today, the site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is open to the public for exploration.
Great walk through the woods. The hillfort itself is in ruins (no surprise given its age). I took the steps up via Trinity Road - these were steep and partially fallen away so i would recommend wearing walking boots. Some great views through gaps in the trees. Perfect for dog walkers, although beware there is a bridleway too so may be horses about.
Lovely gentle walk. I walked with my 81 yr old Mum. And I know she is amazing for her age.
We had a great circular walk up to this Hillfort from a car park near Sandbay. Took about 1 hr 20 with some kessing around at the top. Muddy after some rain so recommend wellies ot walking shoes. I really enjoyed exploring the hill fort at the top and taking in the views of both Weston piers. There is also something magical about the iron fort itself with the twisty trees and iron age storage pits. Apparently a lot of the pits had human remains in them. Believe the Belgae were once here before the Romans arrived! We were able to park for free outside of a car park.
Love walking along the top of the hill above Weston-super-Mare through the woods to the end of the peninsula and looking out over the old pier towards Wales. Lots of work is going into clearing the fort area of scrub and trees at the moment, presumably to preserve the site, as had been quite difficult to see where everything was. Some lovely trees that yhe carefully tended paths wound their way through; lots of holm oak, holly, beech, yew, birch and the poor old ash, quite a lot having been cut down presumably to die back. Ivy trails on lots of trunks. Great views on this clear day to the south, looking over the beach curving away, the pier, and the town towards Brean Down. And to the north over Sand Bay.
A recent trip to Worlebury woods. i was impressed with it. the pathways. layout and things to see made it a great afternoon out. walked 5000 steps didnt even notice i had. i came across the Hillfort. this is the only part that seems to have not changed at all from what i remember years ago. its still several piles of rocks. it would be nice to see some kind of rework done. maybe some type of consrtuction of a fort or bits of a fort. there is so much scope for it. in my opionion its still worth a 5 star review in its current state as its a small part of a much bigger pictire which is the Worlebury wood itself.
Incredible hillfort with a series of clearly visible ditches and ramparts. Within there are numerous storage pits clearly visible. Volunteers are doing a great job at keeping the site cleared. Glimpses of views to Sand Point northwards and Weston to the south. Must go back
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
