Wortley Top Forge is a 17th-century ironworks situated in South Yorkshire, England. This historic site features a restored forge building, where visitors can explore the remains of the original furnace, hearth, and chimney. The forge is surrounded by picturesque countryside, offering scenic views and walking trails.
This is a hidden gem. My partner and I spent a few hours here chatting to the volunteers who help run the machinery and the forge. Very interesting and knowledgeable men. It was lovely having a tour around the forge and getting to see how some of the equipment work first hand. There's also a cute miniature train that you can go on, toilets and also a tea room on site. Will definitely go back. There's an open day on the 1st September 2024.
Veeery interesting place!! Some of the facilities are from the 17th century and are very well preserved. Also 5 stars for the volunteers who make a great job.
A great find! We went on a Sunday morning and expected it to be busy as the weather was lovely but we almost had the place to ourselves! We had a guided tour and then went on the miniature railway which the children loved. The website says the train doesn't start running until 2pm but this is an error - it usually starts around 12pm and the driver let us stay on for 4 loops! The train is by donation and was longer than most we have been on before. Lots of places to sit and have a picnic and grass for children to play on and nice clean toilets. Would highly recommend. We were there for around 2 hours with children aged between 1-5.
Amazing day for all ages. Full of interesting old machinery. Lovely setting. Very family orientated. Volunteers are doing a stunning job on turning it into very worthwhile destination to visit. Watch this space for future events later in year.
Great place to get an insight into the industrial heritage of the area and England's engineering past. Wasn't expecting a guide tour or to see so many things working, from water wheels to steam engines. Well worth the admission price. From the website "Top Forge is a Water Powered Heavy Iron Forge whose history can be traced back to at least 1640. The site has been used for bloomeries and fineries but it is best known for the Wrought Iron Railway Axles that were hammer-welded between 1840 and the closing of the Forge around 1910."
A brilliant place to visit and a bargain. Lots to see from historic buildings, machinery, scenary and lots of very helpful and informative volunteers. We went with our 18month old who was able to toddle around. Theres also a ride on train run by the model engineers. You can pay by online payment or cash. A brilliant day or just a couple of hours.
